Green continues to grow, with and because of AI

In an in-depth interview, Green CEO Roger Süess discusses the future of the data center industry and the implications of artificial intelligence. Where is the journey headed? And what are Green’s plans?

Roger Süess, as CEO of Green, you are at the source of the digital future. Where is the journey headed?

Data centers are the backbone of our connected world and we have been pioneers in this field from the very outset. With the rapid development of information technology and the globalization of the internet, data volumes have increased spectacularly. This growth has become even more extreme thanks to social media and e-commerce, and now we can also add AI, or artificial intelligence, to the mix.

Green is expanding – we’re also interested in some neighboring countries.

Roger Süess, CEO Green

Just as fire, the printing press and electricity fundamentally changed the world, through AI we are in the midst of a technological and societal quantum leap forward. This is because AI is a powerful technology which we can use to dramatically accelerate progress in many areas and catapult ourselves into whole new dimensions.

As AI exerts increasing influence over the everyday lives of companies and private individuals, ultimately becoming commonplace sooner or later, what does this mean for the data center market in Switzerland?

On the one hand, this will definitely mean growth for Green. AI processes vast amounts of data and requires lots and lots of processing power and memory. This all takes place in data centers and will also bring major growth for Green, though predominantly on the application side rather than in the LLM domain (large language model).

Forecast of global data growth

On the other hand, we cannot ignore the fact that this growth will mean more responsibility in terms of how we provide our market services to society and the communities in which we operate, so that we can help shape the digital future in a sustainable manner.

In the past, cities sprang up beside rivers, bridges and trade routes, and today it’s a similar story with data centers. We’re expanding into places that are close to high-speed data networks, close to the relevant economic areas, where added value can be created through data and applications, and where we can generate circular benefits.

We’re also planning to build data centers based on factors such as high availability, geo-redundancy, latency times, energy, geology, etc., which is why you often get conurbations with clusters of data centers. We’re in this for the long haul and choose locations where we can best apply resources, remain attractive in terms of design and fit seamlessly into the urban development concept. That’s why we also take great care in choosing our locations so that we can implement the opportunities presented by the circular economy as efficiently as possible. But that’s something we, as a data center operator, can no longer do on our own. There needs to be far-reaching and far-sighted cooperation between companies, authorities and consumers.
