What is the difference between PPPoE and DHCP?
For connecting to the Internet, the router logs in with the authentication method PPPoE or DHCP / IPoE.
With PPPoE, your router connects to the Internet with a PPPoE username (xxxxx@dsl.green.ch) and password newly assigned by green.ch. These data will be configured on the router. With PPPoE, the IP address can be dynamic and static.
With DHCP/IPoE, the router can connect to the Internet without any credentials. With this option, it is possible that green.ch has more support options in case of a dysfunction (only for FRITZ!Box). Thereby, the support will be faster and more efficient. In addition the green TV customers can benefit of the optimal TV quality "multicast", which is not possible when connecting via PPPoE. With DHCP/IPoE can only be dynamic.
Basic advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages PPPoE:
- static IP can be activated
Disadvantages PPPoE:
- complex support in case of a malfunction, which also causes more effort for the customer
- greenTV can’t be used with multicast
Advantages DHCP/IPoE:
- more support options in case of dysfunction, which is causing less effort for the customer (for ex. The configuration of an Internet number)
- greenTV can be used with multicast
Disadvantages DHCP/IPoE:
- Use of a static IP is not possible
If you’ve a subscription for an IP (Option MIPS1, MIPS4,), you connection will be activated via PPPoE. As standard green.ch activate the internet connections with DHCP
