Green Metro-Campus Zurich enters next stage of construction

The next construction phase on the Metro Campus Zurich has started. With Datacenter N and O, Green is providing further 11,600 m2 of data center space to offer companies performance, security and a sustainable solution for their IT infrastructure for the upcoming digitalization and technology boost.

Waste heat from the data centers will be used by Energie 360° for interconnected energy solutions. Construction of the heating center and district heating network is already underway.

Demand is high

With the Zurich Metro Campus, Green is increasing its data center capacities by 35 megawatts for the operation of customer systems. The campus covers an area of 46,000 m2 and consists of energy-efficient data centers and a business park. The first data center was already completed in December 2022, and the office building will be ready in summer 2024. Construction of Datacenter N and O will start earlier than planned due to the strong increase in demand.

Data growth and digitization as drivers

Data growth is increasing and at the same time the demand for computing power is rising. However, fewer and fewer companies are sticking with their own data centers; this is due to the high investment costs associated with modernization and sustainability. Instead, they are moving their systems to more efficient and sustainable data centers and to the Cloud. With Green serving both enterprises and leading cloud providers, demand is growing particularly fast. "Our growth reflects the rapid technology and digitalization push," explains Roger Sueess, CEO of Green, adding, "Modern data centers are needed to ensure that this transformation can be realized quickly, securely and sustainably."

Waste heat recovery reduces CO2 emissions

The two new data centers will also feature waste heat extraction so that surrounding municipalities can benefit from CO2-neutral heating. Green is investing several million in the in waste heat extraction and is cooperating with Energie 360°, which is implementing several district heating network projects in the region. Thanks to the extraction, Datacenter M will be able to supply up to 3,500 households, industry and commerce. The first district heating center will be built on the campus in 2024. The waste heat from the two new data centers can be used to supply additional households and commerce in the region. "With the use of waste heat and many other measures, we contribute to the circular economy and support the energy transition. Only with sustainable data centers a future-oriented #digitalization can be achieved," explains Roger Süess.
