How does the cloud-smart approach take you further?

The cloud is an important driver of innovation and ensures value creation. However, the overarching cloud strategy is changing: with a cloud-smart approach, you’ll get where you want to go in a more cost-effective, realistic and phased manner.

«Cloud first»? No, strategy first

As diverse as the expectations of the cloud are, so too are the workloads that need to be migrated. And companies vary just as much in terms of organization: in many cases, development and operations are still separate and agile software development has not been introduced across the board. Legacy systems still require active support – in many cases, it may not even make sense to migrate them. Although virtually every company has cloud experience, many questions remain unanswered.

«It’s important that companies move away from just looking at the cloud from a technical perspective.»

Jan Seffinga, Head Cloud Business from Deloitte

Instead, they need to define a cloud vision and strategy and involve all stakeholders.

Cloud smart instead of cloud first

The first companies are beginning to define their strategy as a cloud-smart approach, moving away from the trend in recent years of focusing primarily on rapid cloud deployment and modernization of legacy systems. Cloud smart involves careful consideration and cloud adoption that is aligned with corporate goals and business models.

Gartner expects more than 60% of organizations that have adopted a cloud-first strategy to switch to a cloud-smart approach by 2023. After all, not all use cases are suitable for the public cloud alone. With a cloud-smart approach, the need for speed, agility and degree of innovation in relation to cost efficiency is holistically analyzed and compared with the company’s objectives.

And what does “cloud smart” actually look like? Companies want to exit existing on-premises operating models. Managed platforms, defined as dedicated platforms (private clouds) administered by an external IT partner, are combined with public clouds in a balanced approach. As hardware manufacturers have greatly optimized their offerings in terms of performance, space requirements and energy efficiency, managed platforms are gaining in importance.

The CIO of a leading technology and industrial company with a global IT setup puts it this way:

«Managed platform services enable us to move business-critical applications to the private cloud while ensuring maximum stability and security. They are of central importance to us on our journey to the cloud as we drive forward our transformation.»

In other words, a «cloud-smart» approach is about efficiently supporting a company’s goals. We’d be happy to arrange a short phone call with you to explain how you can benefit from managed platforms.
